Birthday celebration
Just wanna say thank you for the birthday surprise on Monday! It really was a surprise, and I think other teachers who went into the classroom after me got the surprise too, with all the balloons and decor. Thank you for the cake, I have not had a birthday cake for a long while already. Finally, thank you for the present also! I'll see how I can use it, shouldn't be difficult because this is a very stressful week for me.
And of course, my birthday wish is that 1E1 can become a class of exemplary role models for the rest of Pei Hwa! It might be difficult, it requires effort from everyone to do good in every situation and in every way when they are in school, but it is possible! Will you help me realise my wish and make it come true?

Welcome back!
Welcome back to school for Semester 2! Unfortunately I'll be seeing much less of the class this semester because literature is over, but hope we'll still stay in touch (after classes?).
Hope everyone enjoyed our last outing too! I was really impressed by the Peranakan museum when I visited it last year, and that's why I wanted to share it with you all. Like most of you, I didn't really know who are the Peranakans, and the trip there was really enlightening for me.
The SYF performance was amazing wasn't it? It is really incredible to see so many talented Primary school students putting up fantastic performances, playing the band marches that I used to play in Secondary school, dancing almost as well as our own PH dance group etc. It is really inspiring to see them in action, and I hope you are inspired to nurture your own talents too, whatever it may be!
As always, do look for me often if you have something to tell me, or just want a talk or a meal together! This semester has a crazy start and I'm really really busy right now, but I still hope to spare some time for all of you.

Ready for the holiday?
How's everyone? I've had a very good 2 weeks of reservists so far, with the most tiring week coming soon. Everyone in my reservist unit is new to me and I've met lots of interesting people over there. It's refreshing to take a break from work and do something really different like this actually, though I miss being with the class!
I've absolutely no idea what happens in school for you all in this post-exam period! Are you all getting your results/report book this coming week? I hope all of you are happy with your results! Now, whether or not you think you did well for the mid-year, do spend an hour or two everyday revising your work! Flip through what you covered this half year and make sure you really understood everything (don't cheat yourself on this!); if not, look over it and find out the answers. You can't go into the next half year without being absolutely confident of knowing what has been taught previously.
Besides that, look forward to the holidays!

Post of the day
Proverbs - According to 6year olds
Mary taught first grade. She had a class of twenty-five adorable 6yr olds. One day Mary gave each child the first half of a well known proverb and asked them to write in the remainder of the proverb. It's hard to believe these were actually done by first graders. While reading the results, keep in mind that these are only first graders, just 6 years olds.

Work hard for the Mid Years exams!
Good luck for the exams! Hope everyone use your time productively and ask yourself this question constantly: "Am I doing my best to study for the exams?" Just 5 days of hard work before you relax and get ready for the holidays!
While studying, please remember these things:
- Never leave questions that comes into your mind unanswered. Jot anything you want to ask and look for friends or teachers for the answer.
- You MUST have 7 hours of sleep at least!
- Apply exam tips! Despite all my reminders to get you to plan your essays, many of you still do not plan your composition last friday. Use the advice that teachers give and do not do things the same old way!

Doing the NAPFA Standing Broad Jump
I used to take videos of students doing the jump so that I can tell them what they need to improve on, and also got them to film me in action so that they can see what they need to do right. I should have wrote this long ago to teach more people how to jump properly, but I guess better late than never!
Step 1 - Good Swing

Step 2 - Ready stance

Step 3 - Take Off

Stage 4 - Landing

Holiday outing?
I prefer something outdoorsy, or activities that can involve all of us together. Post suggestions in the comments!

IFD victory!
All thanks to the sporting girls who ran hard and jumped high for the netball on Monday noon, 1E1 is going to be mentioned in front of the school and receive a team prize on Friday! Will be good to receive a different form of attention from Mrs Lim for once haha...
For those of you who heard about other class' girls talking behind our back, I want to remind everyone again of the the right thing to do - Do not get provoked, do not respond, do not counter-insult. There will always be people who cannot stand losing and will behave unsportingly after games, and we definitely do not want to tar our own reputation by hurling insults back at them. Getting into arguments with them will only show that we are as petty and ungracious as they are. Simply smile, walk away without saying anything at all, and leave them unsatisfied for not being able to provoke you.
That will not be easy, but then, any true test of character and maturity will be difficult. Let's show the school how true sportspeople behave!

Touch Football!

Our classmates did us proud in Touch football! I'm happy to say that I was there to see them play their hearts out and achieve some great results at the first Touch football inter-school games. It was a very wet and grey Saturday morning and I would usually be in bed still at that time, but it was definitely worth the drenching and the mud to get them to Bukit Timah and watch all the exciting matches.
Another photo of our school team -

T-shirt done!
I'm quite proud of it, and I hope you guys are too. Sorry I couldn't keep it below $20l; like I said, for those who indicated that it is too expensive, you can pay $18 and I'll foot the rest. You can pay the sum to me slowly too, I don't mind that.
Cross your fingers and hope we can get it by Monday morning!

Class spirit
By class spirit, I mean total cooperation and helpfulness towards each other in class. Excellence for Self and Others perhaps. You might think that your studies only depend on your own effort, but you need to know that whatever your classmates (or you) do will affect your studies and the teachers' teaching. Therefore without class spirit, it will be hard for all of us to improve together.
Do we:
- help the duty personnel maintain the class's tidiness?
- remind classmates to pay attention during lessons?
- help classmates collect work if they are absent?
- show courtesy and friendliness towards everyone in class?
In 2 more weeks, it will be International Friendship Week, where there will be exhibition booths done by the Sec 4s for us to learn about different cultures, and also an inter-class games tournament. The boys will be playing soccer and the girls playing captain's ball, and that'll be a chance to show class spirit too. I really hope all of us can be there to play and also cheer for each other; winning classes will be awarded points for best class award!
But first, let's show some class spirit first - Can we finish up our class banner and the class t-shirt design first, so that we have something to show for that day?

First week of Term 2
I do know that all of you were probably quite busy too, and I guess the different subjects all gave some kind of homework for you. Thank you for the work done for the Literature book trailer, I'm so proud of you all for finishing it during the holiday! There was some really good work there, and I really enjoyed watching them. In addition to knowing more about the book, I hope you learned a little about working in groups too, which is an invaluable skill throughout your life.
I am very proud too that so many of the school's rugby team are made up of our class's members! Rugby's a great game and I love to see you all taking time out to enjoy it together. Have great fun and do Pei Hwa proud when the competition comes around!

SINGAPORE NEWS Six SBS double-decker buses burnt at Ang Mo Kio depot By Saifulbahri Ismail, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 07 March 2010 1659 hr

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it dispatched two fire engines and 20 fire fighters to the scene.
The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.
No casualties were reported and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
A spokesperson from SBS said the loss of the buses will have some impact on its operations.
However, SBS will try to minimise inconvenience to commuters by redeploying buses where possible.
The total cost of the six buses is believed to be about S$3 million as each new double decker bus costs about half a million dollars.

Living up to the class Motto
It's something for us to live up to, and to make it happen, we really must be consciously trying to be our best! It's not something that comes naturally without us doing anything, for example.
I hope you guys know that is why there are some things I will nag about. Like the neatness of the rows, the cleaning up of the class room, the proper attitude during reading period et cetera.
I also tried hard to push for and finish the class banner and T-shirt by this term - because it is a symbol of our unity, something that we can be proud of. I want other teachers to know that this class is special when they see the banner and walk under it to enter. We can show our unity by wearing our class t-shirt all together during PE lessons.
Can we all work together and put in the effort to be the best?
Mr Ong.
An old blog...
Mr Ong here again... Just want to show you guys something interesting - I used to write a blog for my past years' literature students until I stopped last year. Not all of it is about the literature work in school actually; in fact I write about all kinds of stuff I thought about or am interested in. Do take a look here!

Chile's curfew city tense amid aftershocks and looting | |||||
![]() Concepcion was empty of most people except soldiers during the curfew
![]() The drive down to Concepcion from Santiago passes through some spectacular countryside. After travelling past the vineyards of the wine-making region the landscape becomes more rugged as you head into Bio-Bio region and Chile's second city. But since this city was rocked by Saturday's earthquake, the normally modern and well-developed roads are now twisted and broken throughout the route. After a journey beset by fallen bridges and long diversions, the final approach into the province of Concepcion came to a frustrating halt just kilometres from the city. The military set up a 16-hour long curfew and were escorting just the most important aid vehicles past the disturbances.
As the young lieutenant explained the situation to a crowd of drivers waiting to enter Concepcion, the ground shook twice in quick succession. The daily aftershocks are still very noticeable here. After some negotiation we're given the piece of paper which grants us access to the quake zone. It is a few kilometres down the road that the scope of this earthquake at last becomes clear. We pass by a destroyed shopping mall and half-a-dozen collapsed buildings on our arrival. Hundreds of soldiers are patrolling the streets and evidence of the recent looting is everywhere. Yet by arriving during a curfew, Concepcion is eerily devoid of cars and almost of people. 'No help' At a destroyed apartment block, where apparently eight bodies have been pulled from the rubble, rescue workers are still searching for survivors using sniffer dogs. They're concerned too about a half-finished apartment block which they say has been structurally damaged and could collapse at any moment. Given the constant earth tremors beneath us, it's a distinct possibility. Then suddenly, the city emerges from its strict curfew.
Thousands of drivers are on the streets trying to reach the nearby town of San Pedro to find clean water and safe shelter. Others, however, can't leave. "We've been defending our homes from the looters," Eduardo Santos tells me, standing outside a badly-cracked apartment block which he and his family are too frightened to sleep in. Instead, they are living in a hastily-erected tent with several other families from the same building. The authorities just walk past us and don't help, he says pointing to some of the troops posted to the city who are dealing with a damaged bridge. Eduardo makes another emergency run into his apartment to get fresh water but refuses to stay there more than a couple of minutes. That has put him in conflict with the troops who want everyone off the streets by nightfall and with the looters who may try again to break into his empty home. News took from BBC News |
